This amazing Victorian cemetery takes up a huge plot of land between Wells Road and Bath Road, sort of in Knowle and sort of in Bedminster.
It’s almost possible to get yourself lost in the immense, overgrown amphitheatre. Sun-dappled paths loop between copses of trees and past plots where angels and epitaphs appear amid the ivy and brambles. It’s a haven for animals such as mice and birds, and you might even see an adder sunning itself beside the World War One memorial.
Some of Bristol’s most notable former residents are buried here, including health pioneer William Budd and theologian and philosopher Raja Rammohun Roy, along with two gorgeous neoclassical chapels. Tread carefully so as not to topple into a grave – there are areas of subsidence around some of the older ones. And remember that the gates are locked at 5pm in summer, earlier in winter, or you could end up spending the night among the stones...
