Angel of the North Posted by: anna goldfinch Date: 05/02/2010 Average Rating: YOUR RATING 0 Comments 135 Views Media caption Originally posted on : One North East You would expect "the largest sculpture in Britain" (as my lovely Geordie friend proudly informs me on my visit) to be positioned in a landscaped park or surrounded by memorial plaques that claim its fame, or hot-dog vendors cashing in on crowds. In actual fact, this charming sculpture is modestly positioned next to the A1 in Gateshead, guarding its beautiful land with no fuss or attention-grabbing histrionics, in that ever-so-English way - its got a job to do and it's going to do it. The first thing that you notice as you approach, is the striking shape it casts, which happened to be sillouetted against the wintry blue sky when I visited. I can imagine this is a perfect place to watch the sunset, or even the odd proposal as dusk. At the very least it provides a stunning view of the Newcastle country-side and a special photo opportunity - there were at least 3 other photographers capturing its sillouette when I was there. Meanwhile small children frolick around its feet - it doesn't mind. The Angel needs no plaque, because it speaks for itself: no pretention here, solid to the core, made of strong stuff, protective and proud of its lands - could there be a better symbol for the Geordie spirit? I don't think so. Images Total Images: 4
