My wife Judi and I were presenters with Bristol Hospital Radio at a time when discussions were being held to bring the ship back to her home in Bristol.
A local printer named Eric Gadd was instrumental in getting local names together, amonst whom was the Millionaire Jack Hayward.
Because of hostility and jealousy in a few influencial business and political figures, Eric Gadd was eventually eased out. It was not a nice experience to witness. A little man (not in statue and certainly not in personality, Eric was mortified and never recovered from being ignored and overstepped.
I think they even excluded him from the festivities during the official welcome back. A very sad story of THE BIG BOYS sinking the SMALL LOCAL BOY .
There are many Bristolians who will remember dear old Eric with fondness and deep respect. Whenever we drive along the access road into Bristol opposite the S S Great Britain. I always waive and think of a true gentle man who also did much money raising for the Bristol Hospital Broadcasting Service and the many other local charities..
