We chose possibly the worst weekend imaginable for our visit to Bristol, right in the middle of the November storms! Undaunted, we visited Brunel's ss Great Britain on Saturday 14th Nov and had a superb morning, despite the truly spectacularly foul weather. The undercover museum houses so many fascinating artifacts, it's worth a visit on it's own! This was my second visit to the ship, the first being very shortly after it's return to Bristol, so it's great to see how much work has been done in restoring the ship to it's former glory. Our time on deck was limited by the wind and rain, but below decks is a thought provoking trip back in time, evoking a real feeling for what was then considered luxury travel, but which by today's standards must have been hell!! The weather decks and dining area are spectacular, but the cabins are an eye opener, even the 1st class ones being tiny and uncomfortable. The full scale working replica of the engine, separated from the luxury dining room by only a thin wall of iron, is magnificent, and makes you wonder what it must have been like trying to have a meal with it thrashing away so close by. Going down into the dry dock, below the "false ocean" is even more of an eye opener- I hadn't realised just how badly corroded the old ship is, she truly was rescued in the nick of time! It does make you wonder though, how such a weakened structure can support all the weight which has been added during the reconstruction. All in all, an absolutely 1st class exhibit, very well worth the entry fee. Oh, and we had lunch in the restaurant on the quay side after our visit, and we can very highly recommend that too!!
